چکیده

The ecological role of tidal freshwater marshes as important fish spawning and nursery habitat has been studied, although fish utilization of associated intertidal mudflats have not been as extensively investigated. Using the same sampling methodology, fish surveys of three separate areas of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. were conducted using a boat based electrofishing unit. The sportfish utilization of an area of expansive intertidal mudflats is compared to that of a restored emergent marsh and that of nearby mature emergent marsh. The annual production of sportfish biomass from each system was estimated and converted to emergy and emdollar equivalents. While the mudflat survey areas were dominated by bullhead catfishes (Ictaluridae), the restored and mature emergent marsh survey areas supported greater numbers of piscivorous fish from the families Moronidae and Centrarchidae. The fisheries emergy analysis provided for an interesting dilemma in that the mudflat system devoid of any emergent vegetation produced greater total annual sportfish biomass emergy than either the restored or mature marsh systems, due entirely to the contributions of catfish which are considered gamefish in D.C. While the restored and mature marsh systems both supported catfish, their sportfish communities were more balanced in terms of species, numbers and biomass. From an emergy perspective, the mudflat system provided more sportfishery emergy and economic emdollar potential than that of the two marsh systems.

Using the Sediment Quality Triad to characterize baseline conditions in the Anacostia River, Washington, DC, USA.

The Sediment Quality Triad (SQT) consists of complementary measures of sediment chemistry, benthic community structure, and sediment toxicity. We applied the SQT at 20 stations in the tidal portion of the Anacostia River from Bladensburg, MD to Washington, DC to establish a baseline of conditions to evaluate the effects of management actions. Sediment toxicity was assessed using 10-day survival...

Short-term effect of capping on microbial communities in freshwater sediments.

Because biogas bubbles can influence cap integrity, the effect of capping and cap material on the ebullition potential in sediments must be studied. The goal of this comprehensive study was to determine the short-term effect of capping regime on the activity, metabolic potential, and community structure of sediment microorganisms. To evaluate the effect of capping (sand, synthetic aggregate, an...

The Ecology of Freshwater Tidal Wetlands

Freshwater tidal wetlands are found in the upper estuaries of most Atlantic Coast river systems where there is sufficient freshwater flow to maintain salinities of less than one percent, but insufficient flow to dampen upstream tidal movement. Odum et al. (1979) conservatively estimate that there are 500,0001,000,000 ha of freshwater tidal wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, of which 1...

Bacterial community profiles from sediments of the Anacostia River using metabolic and molecular analyses.

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND AIM AND SCOPE: Though the tidal Anacostia River, a highly polluted riverine system, has been well characterized with regard to contaminants, its overall resident bacterial populations have remained largely unknown. Improving the health of this system will rely upon enhanced understanding of the diversity and functions of these communities. Bacterial DNA was extracted from ...

Spartina Species Zonation along the Altamaha River Estuary

Changes in freshwater inflow can cause changes in the distribution and diversity of marsh vegetation in estuarine habitats. In the fall of 2002 bankside vegetation was surveyed along the 24 km length of the Altamaha River estuary (n= 14 sites). Sites were quantified for multiple plant and edaphic parameters, including plant density, height, and tiller diameter. In this paper we present the char...
